The shooting of Keith Lamont Scott sparked protests across the country this fall, but yesterday it was announced that the officer involved would face no charges. A county district attorney said that the officer acted “lawfully” when shooting Scott, since all the evidence at the moment pointed to him having a gun.
In September, officers pulled into a parking lot looking for a man with an outstanding warrant, but came across Scott in his car. According to the officers, he had a gun so they asked him to step out. After ignoring their orders to drop the gun, an officer shot him, and he died.

But witnesses and family members have said that Scott wasn’t armed, and the following protests were even more heated after it was revealed that he had a brain injury caused by a motorcycle accident. The decision sparked renewed protests in Charlotte on Wednesday night–four people were arrested.
