U.S. Levies New Sanctions on Iran, Iranian Officials Not Happy

An Iranian official argued that new sanctions imposed by the United States undermine the nuclear deal between the two countries that was cemented during former President Barack Obama’s tenure. Trump signed the bill containing sanctions against Iran and Russia yesterday morning. The new sanctions target those involved with the nuclear program in Iran, by preventing Americans from doing any dealings with those individuals and freezing transactions on property associated with them in the U.S. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in a TV interview, “in our view the nuclear deal has been violated and we will show an appropriate and proportional reaction to this issue.”

Trump has long argued that the Iranian nuclear deal was unwise for the United States, calling it the “worst deal ever” while on the campaign trail in 2016, so it’s no real surprise he signed off on the sanctions. But there are also concerns that he’s moving us too close to potential conflict with Iran, and may anger European allies also included in the nuclear deal.
