San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick sparked controversy after he refused to stand for the national anthem at a game on Friday, and then defended his decision on Sunday. Kaepernick was protesting police brutality and the treatment of black men in the U.S. He explained:
This is because I’m seeing things happen to people that don’t have a voice, people that don’t have a platform to talk and have their voices heard and effect change. So I’m in a position where I can do that, and I’m going to do that for people that can’t.
Public reaction is mixed–a lot of people are mad at Kaepernick for taking a stand (or lack thereof) but others are applauding him for his courage and strength.
