The University of Chicago is now weighing in on the whole safe spaces/trigger warnings for college students debate, by warning its incoming students of the class of 2020 about its policies. In a letter sent to incoming freshmen, the school stated:
Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called ‘trigger warnings,’ we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual ‘safe spaces’ where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.
The school is now receiving a lot of support and a lot of criticism–should we really be surprised?
