The City of Karachi Will Be Run From Prison

Pakistan’s largest city Karachi has a new mayor–former lawmaker, now prisoner–Waseem Akhtar. Akhtar was sentenced to prison more than a month ago for, according to Times, “arranging medical care for alleged terrorists and inciting riots across the city in 2007.” Now the man has been elected mayor.

In December he was put forth as a mayoral candidate for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a party that has garnered quite bit of influence on the city’s politics. MQM Senator Nasreen Jalil had this to say:  “Obviously he should be on the ground to do his work but we just have to work around it.
