Mexico’s President May Have Plagiarized Law Thesis

Outed by Mexican journalist Carmen Artistegui, President Enrique Peña Nieto was found to have ripped nearly a third of his law school thesis from other works. Sigh.

Aristegui apparently has a track record for reporting on the president, from his declining approval ratings to his wife’s suspicious real estate dealings. Last year, she was fired by MVS Communications, and has since continued investigating and posting her work on her website. With the help of an investigative team, Artistegui discovered that President Pena Nieto stole from 10 different works without citations, including the work of a former Mexican president.

According to the NYTimes, Eduardo Sanchez,Nieto Pena’s spokesperson, blamed the repetitiveness on “stylistic errors,” like neglecting to quote passages “or cite original authors mentioned in the bibliography.”

Amateur hour.
