When You Can’t Keep Your Issues Off the Mat

When an athlete goes to compete in the Olympics, he brings his nationality, his heritage and his personal history with him. Those things, however, shouldn’t keep you from showing good sportsmanship. Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby was sent home after refusing to shake hands with Israeli Or Sasson after their match. The IOC severely reprimanded El Shehaby saying  “his behavior went against the rules and spirit of the Olympic Games and the rules of fair play”.

Reports show that El Shehaby’s decision not to shake hands with his opponent was influenced by fans on social media who have pressured him to not even show up for the match because “it would shame Islam.”

“Shaking the hand of your opponent is not an obligation written in the judo rules. It happens between friends and he is not my friend.” El Shehaby said and went on to clarify he reasons as purely political.
