The Deal With Marijuana’s Schedule I Purgatory

Ok, so marijuana policy made a slight budge toward legality this week, but officials have decided to keep the drug in the same category as heroine and peyote. Does this make sense? In some ways, yes, but for Legalize It folks, the MAN is tightening his grip.

According to AP, “the DEA opted to keep pot listed as a Schedule I drug, which means it has no accepted medical purpose and a high potential for abuse.” The DEA will, however, be relaxing its grip on medical marijuana research, opening the study to growers other than the University of Mississippi, the only institution allowed to grow, to apply for licenses.

The DEA will most likely face more pressure on its policies come November, as states weigh in their votes for recreational marijuana.
