Truck Drives into Crowd of People in Stockholm

This morning, someone stole a truck in central Stockholm and drove it into a crowd of people on one of the busiest pedestrian streets in the Swedish capital. The truck hit the window of one of the major department stores, Åhléns, located just above the main subway and train station. This location was also the target of a botched suicide bombing in 2010, which killed the perpetrator but no one else. This time, at least three people died and several people were injured, according to local police.

Simultaneously, there were shots fired in another part of central Stockholm, but it’s not yet clear whether the two are related. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said that everything points to this being a terror attack. Sweden has not had any major terror attacks in years–the last successful one was the siege of the West German embassy in the 1970’s–and shootings are very rare.
