In November 2015, medical student Peter Gold intervened when a hooded man attacked a woman on the street in New Orleans. The attacker then shot Gold in the stomach and was about to shoot him in the head, but his gun jammed, sparing Gold’s life. Security cameras recorded the altercation and later led to the arrest of the perpetrator, Euric Cain, who was sentenced to 54 years in prison.
Luckily, Gold recovered fully, got his medical degree, and was hailed as a hero. As if that wasn’t enough, he also went on to start a nonprofit called Strong City, which provides support and education for youths at risk of entering a life of crime in New Orleans. This morning, Gold appeared on TODAY in his first interview since the shooting and he continues to get accolades for his heroism.
