Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has resigned amid a messy infidelity scandal involving his senior political adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason. On Friday it was revealed that he attempted to cover up his affair with Mason by threatening people who knew with prosecution and sending harassing messages. At one point, he asked his bodyguard to break up with Mason, rather than doing it himself.
But while Bentley was having an affair, he was also breaking the law. According to the Alabama attorney general’s office, Bentley failed to disclose a $50,000 personal loan to his campaign account. He also paid almost $9,000 of that campaign money to Mason’s lawyers. Special prosecutor Ellen Brooks said Bentley chose to quit his job yesterday after a plea agreement on two charges–failing to file a major contribution report and knowingly converting campaign contributions to personal use. He received a suspended jail term, a fine of $7,000, will be placed on probation, and will be required to do community service.
