At least 60 former U.S. gymnasts have spoken out about sexual abuse allegations against the former USA Gymnastics doctor, Dr. Larry Nassar. On Sunday’s episode of “60 Minutes,” some of the women accusing Nassar spoke publicly for the first time since the claims were made in the summer of 2015. They said they didn’t tell anyone at the time because they thought his behavior was part of his treatment, and they were very young at the time. Attorney John Manly represents more than 40 of the women and blamed USA Gymnastics for not looking out for its athletes: “Because this is somebody who is a serial predator. But the story here is that no one was watching to protect these girls. And they put medals and money first,” he said. He believes Nassar abused girls from every Olympic team since 1996.
According to the Indy Star, it took USA Gymnastics five weeks to report Nassar to the authorities after the women spoke out. Nassar is currently in jail for possession of child pornography and criminal sexual conduct in unrelated cases.
