Crime in America 2017: Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities Under 200,000

Rockford, Illinois, is the most dangerous city in the U.S. with a population between 100,000-200,000 people, displacing Little Rock, Arkansas, which now ranks as #2. Tallahassee, Florida moved onto the list at #8 after just missing the cut at #12 last year; Odessa, Texas also moved from #11 to #9. Many of the rest of the positions held steady and only saw small increases or decreases in their violent crime rates.

#3 Springfield, Missouri

Springfield, MO: Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities Under 200,000 in 2017

Springfield, Missouri, held steady at the #3 spot, a space it occupied for the first time in last year’s Crime in America rankings. Springfield saw a noteworthy increase of 14 percent in its violent crime rate, from 1,186 per 100,000 people to 1,356 per 100,000. However, Springfield did see a nice drop in murders–in 2014 there were 16 murders in the city, in 2015 there were only 10. The instances of rape, robbery, and aggravated assault all saw increases between 12 and 17 percent.
