Georgia’s Stone Mountain Accepts More Refugees Than NYC and LA

Despite Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s vow to refuse Syrian refugee settlement in his state, Georgia has absorbed quite a few. He is one of 27 governors who have refused refugees or have questioned the vetting process.

A little town in DeKalb county, Stone Mountain, has taken in more Syrian refugees since October 2015 than Los Angeles and New York combined. Now the number isn’t crazy or anything but it is interesting.

According the 2013 census as well as more recent data, larger cities have been taking in refugees at much lower rates than small municipalities. Stone Mountain has 72 Syrian refugees, while Los Angeles and NYC took in eight each since last year.

One of Monday night’s debate topics will be “Securing America” and it is certain that refugee acceptance will be touched upon during that discussion.
