On Monday night, a commercial aircraft crashed into the mountains outside of Medellín in Colombia, killing almost everyone aboard. There were 72 passengers and nine crewmembers on board, and only five people survived. The chartered plane was leaving from Bolivia, carrying players from a very popular small town soccer club called Chapecoense, on their way to the finals in the Copa Sudamericana tournament. The team had only been playing in Brazil’s top division for two years and was a Cinderella story that many Brazilians took pride in.
But there’s one big question on most people’s minds: if the weather conditions were so bad, why was the plane in the air at all? The investigation will hopefully tell, and in the meantime the country will honor the deceased with three days of mourning and will suspend soccer activities until further notice.
