Why Do We Have The Electoral College?

After it became clear that more people voted for Hillary Clinton than for Trump, people are calling for an amendment to the Electoral College. All the votes aren’t even counted yet, but according to NBC it is likely that Clinton got at least a million more votes than Trump. Americans chose Hillary.

Even Trump himself bashed the system in 2012 when it seemed like Mitt Romney would win the popular vote but lose the election (he eventually lost both).

This is the second time in five elections that the candidate with fewer votes won the White House. And a system with electoral votes does not exist in any other democracy in the world. So why do we still use it?
