Ben & Jerry’s shops in Australia are taking a serious step to encourage Australians to pass marriage equality–the stores won’t allow people to order two scoops of the same flavor until gay marriage is legal.
Ben & Jerry’s, which has 26 shops in Australia, posted a statement on its website explaining the protest. It reads:
Imagine heading down to your local Scoop Shop to order your favorite two scoops of Cookie Dough in a waffle cone. But you find out you are not allowed – Ben & Jerry’s has banned two scoops of the same flavor. […] But this doesn’t even begin to compare to how furious you would be if you were told you were not allowed to marry the person you love. So we are banning two scoops of the same flavor and encouraging our fans to contact their MPs to tell them that the time has come–make marriage equality legal! Love comes in all flavors!
We’ll see if the Ben & Jerry’s protest has any impact on marriage equality in Australia. But in the meantime, it appears that plenty of people are applauding the American-based ice cream company.
