A bus carrying Coptic Christians was attacked in Egypt on Friday. Gunmen stormed the bus, killed at least 23 people, and wounded many others. Coptic Christians, often referred to as “Copts,” are a beleaguered religious minority in Egypt; they make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s population. They have been targeted by the Islamic State and other related groups in recent years. Last month, suicide bombers attacked two Coptic Christian churches on Palm Sunday. The two attacks left almost 50 people dead. There was also a suicide bombing at a church in December. It’s unclear which group was behind the bus attack today.
The group that was attacked was traveling to the Monastery of St Samuel the Confessor, about 85 miles south of Cairo, to pray. The Coptic community in Egypt is currently very nervous, and says that Egypt is not doing enough to protect its people.
