Last night, Jimmy Kimmel started off his show in a more serious manner than usual, telling the audience about his son who was born on April 21. As he was fighting to keep his tears back, he said that three hours after his son Billy was born, a very attentive nurse noticed that the baby was turning purple and had a heart murmur. It turned out he was born with a heart disease and needed immediate surgery. “It was the longest three hours of my life,” Kimmel said.
Luckily, this story had a happy ending and Billy was allowed to go home with his family after six days. But Kimmel took the opportunity to discuss health care in America and urged politicians to try and find some common ground. He pointed out that no matter your political party, most want children to be able to get health insurance even if they are born with a disease. “You were born with a preexisting condition, and if your parents didn’t have medical insurance, you might not even live long enough to get denied because of a preexisting condition,” he pointed out.
