A 35-year-old millionaire’s advice to millennials has caused some outrage. Property mogul Tim Gurner appeared on Australian TV and said that young people today have too high of expectations: “They want to eat out every day, they want travel to Europe every year.” He said if millennials stopped eating “smashed avocado” for $19 and buying coffee all the time, they could afford to buy houses. He also blamed reality TV and said young people think a Kardashian lifestyle is realistic. Another man being interviewed, who is a financial expert, said that not prioritizing homeownership is “the single biggest mistake millennials are making.”
These statements made many millennials see red–as most of us know, real estate prices are sky high today and many young people struggle with paying off student loans, paying for health insurance, and work low-paying entry level jobs. Twitter users were not happy and thought the millionaire is the one who needs a reality check. Also, Gurner got $34,000 from his granddad to get started with his business–and that would buy a hell of a lot of avocado toast.
