Qantas CEO Gets Pied by a Protester

When the CEO of Australian airline Qantas, Alan Joyce, took the stage during a business forum in Perth, a man walked up and shoved a lemon meringue pie in his face. The protester, Tony Overheu, said he was protesting Joyce’s support of gay rights. Gay marriage is still illegal in Australia and Joyce is outspoken in his support of gay rights. In March he joined with about 20 other CEOs from some of the country’s largest companies to sign a letter in support of marriage equality.

Joyce was addressing 500 people at a Hyatt hotel when he was pied and said later that he has no intention to back down. “I have every intention to continue to be vocal on those social and community issues,” he said. The protester, 67-year-old Overheu, said that Joyce and the other CEO’s are “bulldozing” Australia with their campaign for marriage equality. Joyce said he intends to press assault charges.
