Today, the United Kingdom took the first formal step toward Brexit by triggering Article 50, the formal mechanism for any country wishing to leave the European Union. The process to take the UK out of the EU will be long and, for many people, painful. Negotiations must be completed within two years, but no one really knows what the rest of the process is going to be like, as no country has ever left the EU before.
About half of the country voted to stay, including the majority of Scotland, which is now weighing the possibility of breaking off from the UK, and potentially staying with the EU. The triggering of Article 50 also requires the delivery of a letter from Prime Minister Theresa May to the EU, and this morning people were wildly speculating about what exactly she wrote in it.
