Trump Recites “Irish Proverb,” Which Turns Out to Be by Nigerian Poet

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, and yesterday Donald Trump decided to honor the Irish during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. Trump called Kenny a “great guy” and his “new friend” and highlighted how Irish immigrants have contributed to the United States for hundreds of years. Then he recited his “favorite Irish proverb.” But…was it really an Irish proverb?

A quick internet search revealed that it was actually part of a longer poem, written by Nigerian poet Albashir Adam Alhassan. Oops.
