Yesterday, the Netherlands held its general election. Leading up to the vote, many feared that increasingly nationalist sentiments and anger over immigration would lead to a victory for far-right populist Geert Wilders. But, after the highest turnout in three decades, sitting Prime Minister Mark Rutte won more votes. Other European leaders expressed relief after the election result was official; Germany and France, where far right movements are also strong, will hold general elections later this year. “This night is a night for the Netherlands–after Brexit, after the American elections–where we said stop it, stop it to the wrong kind of populism,” Rutte said.
Great vibes! One team, one family! The kingdom of the Netherlands!
