DiCaprio as a Muslim Poet Is Pissing Everyone Off

Look, a biopic about 13th century Muslim poet Jalaluddin al-Rumi is in the works! And Dan Franzoni, the same guy who wrote “The Gladiator” wants to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as the Sufi scholar! Boo? Now, listen, I’m not one to get in the way of a good movie-making but is this really who we should pick to play Rumi?

Franzoni and other producers say DiCaprio in the role will challenge Muslim stereotypes and introduce viewers to Rumi’s extraordinary life. But does casting a white actor in a non-white role really help racism and prejudice?
