Over the weekend, the “Wonder Woman” movie premiered and broke a record, becoming the largest opening for a female director, ever. This is a big deal, since director Patty Jenkins is the first female director to make a major superhero movie. Starring Gal Gadot, the movie made an estimated $100 million domestically in just one weekend. But although it depicts a female superhero and represents female empowerment, it has been an uphill battle. Some men seem to have been extremely offended by several movie theaters’ decision to have women-only screenings. At the end of May, Austin’s mayor shut down a man who wrote a letter, complaining about it. The theater responded by creating more women-only screenings across the country. After that, men protested the theater’s website and called the screenings “sexist” and “bigoted.”
The male outrage at a one-time event for women made a lot of women see red, and question those reactions.
They also pointed out why the women-only screenings were a great idea.
