After the tragic attack in Nice, France left more than 80 dead and 200 injured, everyone had a lot to say. But the most notable, and the most abhorrent, came from none other than former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in an interview on Fox News:

Let me be as blunt and as direct as I can be. Western civilization is in a war, we should frankly test every person here who is of a muslim background and if they believe in sharia they should be deported. Sharia is incompatible with western civilization.

Setting aside the obvious issues with the Constitution, our national security interests, and human decency, Gingrich doesn’t really understand Sharia law, as Jeffrey Goldberg at the Atlantic thoughtfully points out. While Gingrich is claiming that his interview was distorted, it’s paramount that we ask: why do we even pay attention to Newt Gingrich anymore?
