New York Times columnist David Brooks is getting slammed on Twitter today after writing a column called “How We Are Ruining America,” about the American upper-middle-class. One paragraph raised a lot of eyebrows:
“Recently I took a friend with only a high school degree to lunch. Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop. Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” and ingredients like soppressata, capicollo and a striata baguette. I quickly asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else and she anxiously nodded yes and we ate Mexican.”
Brooks’ was immediately called a “condescending a**,” among other things, on Twitter.
(Editor’s note: Padrino isn’t even a type of sandwich. It’s a word for godfather. That makes this whole thing weirder.)
