An ex-diplomat who fled North Korea described the Asian nation’s leadership as “crumbling” at a press conference today. Thae Yong-ho is the highest-ranking defector in several years and fled to South Korea last summer. In a drastic change, the man who used to travel the world promoting North Korea as a utopia has now vowed to spend the rest of his life trying to bring down the government. He said that the more time he spent abroad and compared his home country to democracies, the less confidence he had in North Korea.
Many hoped that Kim Jong Un would help the country break free from poverty, but that hasn’t happened. He ordered 64 public executions of political opponents just last year–which is believed to be double the previous year’s count. Thae’s dissent has angered the government, but he is still encouraging a revolt and says that more and more people are reacting. He says he has seen signs of unprecedented resistance, such as the smuggling of outside information and goods more openly than before. “Kim Jong-un’s days are numbered,” Thae said.
