A girl who may very well be the youngest hacker ever struck on Christmas weekend. Six-year-old Ashlynd Howell in Arkansas quick-wittedly used her sleeping mom’s fingerprint to buy Pokémon toys on the family’s iPad…for a grand total of $250. Her mom, Bethany, didn’t even wake up. When the family got 13 notifications about purchases from Amazon, they thought they had been hacked. But, “No, Mommy, I was shopping,” Ashlynd said.
This shows just how easy it is to get around functions that are meant to make it difficult to accidentally buy things and prevent kids from buying things themselves. And the Federal Trade Commission has previously criticized online retailers such as Amazon, Google, and Apple for precisely this problem. But you have to admit, it was a pretty genius move on the kid’s part!
