Cuba Wants to Pay Off its Debt with Rum

Cuba doesn’t have much money, but it does have a ton of rum. So the government figured, why not pay off some of that old Cold War-era debt to the Czech Republic in rum? After all, the Czechs already import around $2 million of Cuban rum every year. Cuba owes the Czech Republic $276 million, so the Czech Finance Ministry spokesman Michal Zurovec said that the government is considering the offer, but would like to have at least part of the payment in cash.

Cuba is burdened by a huge debt: at the end of 2014 it totaled an estimated $24.7 billion, but it has recently reached agreements for debt forgiveness with some countries. If the Czechs accept the offer of rum, that would help the Cubans reduce their debt further, and the Czechs wouldn’t have to worry about what to buy for happy hour for a few decades.
