Bill Cosby’s lead lawyer has quit his defense team before his retrial. Brian McMonagle filed paperwork to withdraw as Cosby’s counsel just three months before Cosby will be retried on charges that he raped Andrea Constad. In the first trial, Cosby and his team claimed that he had a consensual sexual encounter with Constand. That strategy worked, at least somewhat, because the jury ended up being unable to reach a verdict after over 50 hours of deliberation and a mistrial was declared.
But McMonagle appeared to butt heads with other members of Cosby’s team, particularly his spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt. For example, right after the mistrial was declared, McMonagle and Wyatt argued over who would give a public statement. Those disagreements are believed to have contributed to the change in personnel.
Coby’s retrial is currently slated for November.
