Tennis superstar Serena Williams has accused Romanian tennis coach Ilie Nastase of making racist remarks about her unborn child after he was overheard saying, “Let’s see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?” Williams responded to the coach’s comments with an Instagram post, saying, “It disappoints me to know we live in a society in which people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child, and sexist comments against my peers.”
Nastase has made other offensive remarks about women–the day after the alleged comments about Williams’s baby he called British coach Anne Keothavong and British player Johanna Konta “f*cking bitches” during a match between Britain and Romania. He also asked Keothavong for her room number. The International Tennis Federation decided to suspend him and will conduct a full investigation into his remarks. “I don’t need this bullshit,” was Nastase’s response. “I don’t give a shit if they fine me.” Williams thanked the ITF and said, “They will have my full support.”
