Crime in America 2016: Top 10 Safest Cities Over 200,000

The top three safest cities in the United States remained the same this year, with Irvine, California taking the number one spot, Gilbert, Arizona second on the list, and Fremont, California rounding out the top three. The top 10 also featured two cities that were not included on last year's list--Irving, Texas and Chula Vista, California, at number #9 and #10, respectively. All statistics are based on 2014 data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. Plano, TX: Top 10 Safest Cities Over 200,000 in 2016

Plano, Texas, moved one spot from #6 to #7 on this year’s list. Plano is located in the northeast corner of Texas, just outside of Dallas. Plano saw a 17 percent increase in crime this year. That increase appeared to be present across all categories of violent crime, with noticeable increases in the number of robberies and aggravated assaults. This is the second year in a row that Plano has seen an increase in its violent crime rate, but it remains on the top 10 safest cities list.

Murder Rate: 1/100,000 people
Population: 277,822
Officer to Population Ratio: 1:796
