The top three safest cities in the United States remained the same this year, with Irvine, California taking the number one spot, Gilbert, Arizona second on the list, and Fremont, California rounding out the top three. The top 10 also featured two cities that were not included on last year's list--Irving, Texas and Chula Vista, California, at number #9 and #10, respectively. All statistics are based on 2014 data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. Henderson, Nevada, located outside Las Vegas, moved from the #5 spot to #6 after a notable 20 percent increase in violent crime. In 2013, the violent crime rate was 137 per 100,000 people, this year’s increase brought it to almost 165 per 100,000. One of the reasons for this sharp increase may have come from Henderson switching to the FBI’s revised definition of rape; the previous year’s reporting was based on the legacy definition. The FBI changed how it defines rape to be more inclusive and accurate in 2013, and as cities begin to use the new definition, higher rates of rape are being reported in most cities.

Violent Crime Rate: 164.9/100,000 people
Murder Rate: 1/100,000
Population: 274,121
Officer to Population Ratio: 1:833
Rank Last Year: #5
