The top three safest cities in the United States remained the same this year, with Irvine, California taking the number one spot, Gilbert, Arizona second on the list, and Fremont, California rounding out the top three. The top 10 also featured two cities that were not included on last year's list--Irving, Texas and Chula Vista, California, at number #9 and #10, respectively. All statistics are based on 2014 data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. Virginia Beach, Virginia moved to the #4 spot on the list from #8 the previous year. Virginia Beach experienced a notable decrease of almost 10 percent in its violent crime rate in 2014. The drop appears to be mostly attributed to a decrease in the number of robberies, from 304 in 2013 to 252 in 2014. Incidents of rape also decreased, from 140 in 2013 to 107 in 2014. A beach town that sees roughly six million visitors annually, Virginia Beach is the largest and arguably busiest city on the Law Street’s list of the safest cities.

Violent Crime Rate: 146/100,000 people
Murder Rate: 4/100,000 people
Population: 451,102
Officer to Population Ratio: 1:573
Rank Last Year: #8
