Memphis, Tennessee moved up a spot in this year’s rankings, ranking #2 after its violent crime rate increased by about 5 percent in 2014. Memphis’s increase in crime happened across every category of violent crime. The largest increases occurred in the number of rapes and murders, which went up by 14.5 percent and 13 percent respectively. The number of murders also hit an eight-year high, with 140 in 2014. The city had 501 rapes, 3,285 robberies, and 7,473 aggravated assaults.
