Springfield, Illinois, is a newcomer to Law Street’s list of most dangerous cities between 100,000-200,000. Springfield had an increase in violent crime of about 5 percent, which bumped it from the #11 spot the previous year to #7 this year. Part of the increase may be able to be explained by the fact that Springfield began using the FBI’s revised definition of rape for the first time in 2014–it had previously been using the legacy definition that was narrower and outdated. Springfield’s incidences of rape increased from 71 to 97, possibly as a result of the FBI’s revised and more inclusive definition.
Violent Crime Rate: 1,065/100,000 people
Murder Rate: 3/100,000 people
Population: 117,134
Officer to Population Ratio: 1:505
Rank Last Year: #11
