By  |

All eyes were on the results of the presidential election on Tuesday night, and rightfully so. But America is changing in other ways, chief among which is the widening acceptance of marijuana. Nine states voted on ballot measures to legalize marijuana either recreationally or medically. See how the four states with medical measures on their ballots voted below.

Amendment 2 will legalize medical marijuana for individuals with specific debilitating conditions, including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and PTSD. It needed a supermajority of at least 60 percent to pass.

Analysis: Florida overwhelmingly voted in favor of implementing a legal medical marijuana framework on Tuesday, with over 71 percent of voters supporting Amendment 2. Florida represents an important milestone for southern states in liberalizing the region’s marijuana laws. Florida must register dispensaries, growers, and patient ID cards by next October.

Moriah Barnhart, the mother of a two-year-old girl who uses cannabis to treat a brain tumor, expressed her elation to the Miami-Herald: “Getting over 60 percent at this point means so much both symbolically and legally because we’re able to relinquish the name of criminals that has been forced on us,” she said.
