The man was a Muslim tourist, in the US for a medical procedure.

Ahmed al-Menhali came to the U.S. from the United Arab Emirates for a medical procedure. What he didn’t expect was police officers approaching him, guns in the lobby of his hotel, forcing him to the ground. Now officials in Avon, Ohio, where the incident took place, have apologized.

A hotel clerk saw Menhali and thought he was a terrorist because he was wearing traditional clothing and talking on the phone in Arabic. She texted her sister and father that she was panicking, and both of them called 911. In a phone call that is posted on YouTube, the sister says the man was “pledging his allegiance or something to ISIS.”

The officers were wearing body cameras, and in one of the videos they are heard yelling aggressively to Menhali to lie down, before approaching and handcuffing him. However, when they searched Menhali and found nothing, it was brushed off as a misunderstanding. But the shock of being held at gunpoint and accused of being a terrorist caused the man to suffer a light stroke. A paramedic was at the scene to treat the hotel clerk for a “panic attack,” and made sure Menhali got to the hospital.

Xenophobia and racism have reached new levels if a tourist can’t even wear his own clothes and speak in his own language without being forced to the ground at gunpoint. The event caught the attention of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

“This near hysteria [against Muslims] has been created by political candidates. It’s irresponsible and dangerous,” said Julia Shearson, director of the Cleveland chapter of CAIR to Al-Jazeera.

The incident caused many reactions on social media.

The United Arab Emirates demanded an apology and even warned their citizens to not wear traditional clothing if they visit the United States. The police chief and Avon Mayor Bryan K. Jensen met with Menhali to apologize on Saturday and said in a statement that there might be criminal charges against the clerk that notified 911.

Menhali told Arabic newspaper Al Arabiya that the police hurt his back and threw his phone on the ground. He also pointed out: “The policemen who humiliated and insulted me arrived at [the hotel] without explosives experts or counter-terrorism forces because they knew I’m not a terrorist.”

Menhali said that he appreciated the apology, but also wants the people who called 911 to be held responsible, and that the authorities should use this experience for cross-cultural education purposes. That is a high-minded response from someone who was treated wrongly, and is educational itself.

This isn’t technically an arrest, but it does involve police officers and a taser, so we’ll take a look. Police in Nebraska lured a cat down from a tree by getting the feline to follow the red laser beam. The kitty is now safe, and has been adopted.

Carlos Adonis Ramos-Erazo was arrested in Florida after he was pulled over for speeding, claimed he needed to use the bathroom, and then drove away from the police. The cops smelled marijuana in his car and followed him to his house. When the police finally put him in the car…he did indeed need to go number 2. Apparently it took a while to clean up.

It’s actually unclear if this story ended in an arrest, but it certainly made the police in Toronto mad. They were called to an apartment complex after one roommate allegedly attacked another because the latter took a shower too early in the morning. One of the officers summed it up best when he said: “Is it the most effective use of police resources? No”

Lorenzo Adan Ramirez of Tavares, Florida, was arrested after he exposed himself to women in the ladies’ bathroom. His explanation for the incident? He was trying to get a bug out of his clothes. Police didn’t buy it, and he’s been booked on charges of voyeurism.

While this story isn’t technically an arrest, it’s too good to pass up. Councillor Jackie Burns, of South Lanarkshire, Scotland, removed all public toilets from his district earlier this year as a cost-saving measure. But this week, he was ironically fined by the police for peeing in the street.

The Hibachi Grill and Supreme Buffet in Daytona Beach, Florida, had a surprise guest drop by this week–literally. Justin Grimes, 30, fell through the ceiling of the restaurant, after trying to steal things from the manager’s office. Joshua Fort, 26, was arrested in Florida after he attacked a DJ at a karaoke bar. The reason for his beef with the DJ was that he claimed the sound on his microphone was off. He was brought into custody and the bartender explained to reporters, “That is not a typical night.”

A Michigan woman was arrested this week after she broke into a house, and then fled after being confronted by the homeowner. She hit a tray of cupcakes in the process, which it made it rather easy for the police to identify her–she was covered in icing when they caught up to her.

Andres Josue Leal Valle was arrested in New York after he was stopped at JFK airport. He was found with 11 pounds of cocaine, but they were in a rather interesting place–packed in bottles of oil and vinegar. That would make for a truly bad salad dressing, so I guess we should be thankful it was discovered.

John Morgan and his girlfriend Ashley Duboe were suspects in a bank robbery that took place in Ashville, Ohio. There Were Probably Easier Ways

Kristofer Pregent, 22, used to work in a chocolate factory in Vermont. But one day he decided he didn’t want to work there anymore, so he did what any rational human being would do in an attempt to get fired: he borrowed a co-worker’s phone and called in a bomb threat. He was fired…but he also got a nice visit from the police.

Last week’s top stories ran the gamut from cheating spouses to the best places to get a joint J.D./M.B.A degree. The top story of the week was a breakdown of the strangest arrests making the news, followed by a look at the Ashley Madison hack and the future of online privacy. The #3 story was the J.D./M.B.A. ranking for the University of California-Berkeley School of Law. ICYMI, check out the top posts from last week:

#1 Weird Arrests of the Week

It’s the end of the week, which means its time to relax and reflect on all the stupid things people have done this week. Specifically, some fantastically odd arrests. Check out the slideshow here.

#2 Ashley Madison Hack: The Future of Online Privacy Doesn’t Look Good

A few weeks ago, a group of hackers called the “Impact Team” threatened to expose the profiles of people who had accounts on Ashley Madison, a dating site specifically aimed at married people who are looking to cheat. The hackers threatened to “release customer records, including profiles with all the customers’ secret sexual fantasies and matching credit card transactions, real names and addresses, and employee documents and emails” if the site was not taken down. The parent company–Avid Life Media–did not comply, and now that data has been released to the public. Read the full story here.

#3 Top 10 Schools for J.D./M.B.A. Programs: #9 University of California-Berkeley School of Law

The legal industry is changing and law schools are no exception. Applications and enrollment are both down, and the value of the traditional legal education with its current price tag is the subject of continual debate. Law Street Specialty Rankings are a detailed resource for prospective law students as they consider the many law schools across the country. Law Street Specialty Rankings blend the quantitative and qualitative in a way that accurately highlights the top law schools based on specialty programs. Check out the University of California-Berkeley School of Law’s ranking here.

It may be the dog days of summer, but that hasn’t stopped some people from getting in trouble in really stupid ways. Check out the weird arrests of the week below:

A man in Cadillac, Michigan, received a rude awakening when a man broke into his apartment and threatened him at knifepoint. However this wasn’t a normal break in–the man who broke in demanded that the homeowner smoke weed with him at that very moment. He was quickly apprehended by police.

I know many of us are still recovering from fun times after the long weekend, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is. In fact, some people have been working overtime by committing dumb crimes and getting arrested for them. Check out the weirdest arrests of the last week:

Jerry Moody, 51, is either really cheap or thinks that the prices at Disney World are just a little too high. He was arrested last week after trying to run out on a tab totaling almost $100. This is the fifth time he’s been arrested on Disney property–he evidently isn’t allowed there anymore because of his compulsive dining-and-dashing.

Woman Calls 911 When She Doesn’t Get Her Drugs, Gets Arrested https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/weird-news-blog/woman-calls-911-doesnt-get-drugs-gets-arrested/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/weird-news-blog/woman-calls-911-doesnt-get-drugs-gets-arrested/#respond Thu, 09 Jul 2015 12:30:23 +0000 http://lawstreetmedia.wpengine.com/?p=44776

When you are buying drugs and the seller takes your money but gives you nothing in return, do not call the police.

Okay. I can’t believe I am about to say this. I don’t care if someone takes your $5 but does not give you your weed, you just cannot call the cops to complain about being stiffed. If you do, you will get in trouble. And if my admittedly limited knowledge of pot prices is accurate, you will get in trouble over some very poor quality marijuana.

(Before I continue with this story, I have a confession to make. Whenever I do not have a good story lined up for the week, I just Google ‘weird legal stories Florida.’ It never disappoints. Now back to this week’s weird Florida story … )

Courtesy of Giphy.

Courtesy of Giphy.

I’ve Been Robbed!

Daneshia Heller, a 19-year-old Florida resident, had an emergency. She had just been robbed. When she went over to a man’s house to buy some pot, she had expected to receive said pot in exchange for the $5 she had given him.

Unfortunately, the man allegedly took the money but didn’t give anything back. Heller did what any irrational person would do. She called 911.

“He got my money, and I want my drugs. Can you send an officer?” she asked the operator.

A Wish Come True

You know how if you find a genie and you make a wish it is going to come true in a way you never expected? Like how in the Geico commercial a million bucks gets granted as a million male deer (aka bucks)?

Courtesy of Giphy.

Courtesy of Giphy.

Well think of this 911 operator as Heller’s genie in a bottle. Heller was granted her wish: a cop did come to the scene of the alleged crime. Only, the cop didn’t arrive for precisely the reason Heller had wanted him.

You see, drugs are illegal in Florida, both in buying and selling. Which means if you call up and admit you are trying to buy some, especially if you dial 911 to do it, you will probably get in a little trouble yourself.

Taking Some Flakka

If this had been the only thing to happen, though, then maybe this story would not have been so bad. However, when the cops arrived, they saw an angry Heller talking to herself. This aroused their suspicion.

When they checked her person, they found a white substance in one of her pockets. As it turned out, it was Flakka, a psychosis-inducing drug.

The Legal Consequences

After the substance was found, Heller was taken into custody and charged with the following:

  • Drug possession
  • Misusing the 911 system
  • Violating parole from an earlier, unrelated charge

Moral of the Story

As with any good story, there are a few key takeaways:

  1. Don’t be a tattletale (especially don’t tattle on your potential drug dealer);
  2. Don’t call 911 unless it is actually an emergency;
  3. If you call the cops about a theft, make sure you hide your drugs before they get there; and,
  4. Just don’t do drugs in general.

This may all seem like a lot to ask, but I promise you they are all good ideas if you do not want to get arrested and be talked about here.

Alexander Katz, of Logan, Utah, was arrested after he stole a car this week. Unfortunately, the heist didn’t quite go as planned–the car Katz stole was a manual, and he didn’t know how to drive it. His girlfriend, who was underage, was also arrested after the couple ditched the car and ran to gas station to call a cab.

Introducing Flakka: The New Cocaine https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/introducing-flakka-new-cocaine/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/introducing-flakka-new-cocaine/#respond Fri, 12 Jun 2015 18:28:47 +0000 http://lawstreetmedia.wpengine.com/?p=42902

Missing the Bath Salts craze of 2014? Don't worry, the latest bizarre drug has arrived.

The post Introducing Flakka: The New Cocaine appeared first on Law Street.

Flakka, or gravel as it is also known thanks to its composition of small crystals, is a new drug sweeping across the nation. The epidemic originated in South Florida in 2014 and now has been linked to many deaths, arrests, and overdoses throughout the country. The synthetic drug is first produced in China and sometimes Pakistan, before being shipped to the United States. From here, it is sold on the streets for a very low price as compared to other popular drugs with similar reactions, such as cocaine and bath salts, the latter of which infamously caused chaos a few years ago.

What exactly is flakka? It is usually made from Alpha-PVP, which is a synthetic type of cathinone, a stimulant that is made from the Khat plant. This plant grows in the Middle East and Somalia, and its leaves are often chewed to achieve a slight high. The chemical cathinone can be so strong that it sometimes delivers harsher effects than crystal meth. Flakka is already very dangerous to take alone, but if a user were to take more than a single dose or to combine it with other drugs, then there could be disastrous results. It was also reported that this drug can be extra harmful because it doesn’t always arrive pure, and so it sometimes is laced with other deadly drugs, which would only intensify the effects on the user.

The use of flakka in the United States is strongest in South Florida, where it is believed to have first emerged. South Florida is sometimes known as a haven for drug users given how easy it is to access substances in this area since so many are imported there. Cases involving this powerful drug have also been reported in many other states, such as Ohio, Texas, and Tennessee. Flakka has reportedly led to 27 deaths in the past eight months alone in Broward County, Florida. There also three or four hospitalizations a day in this county because of the drug.

The name is derived from the Spanish term “la flaca,” which is slang for a beautiful, slender woman. Authorities believe that the drug is shipped by boat to South America and then it is brought to Florida through the Caribbean. Given Florida’s extensive coastline, authorities are having extreme difficulty trying to pinpoint where exactly the drug enters the country. Many law enforcement agencies have joined the search for flakka traffickers, dealers, and users.

Flakka can be taken in many different ways, including snorting, ingesting, smoking, injecting, or vaping it using electronic cigarettes. Experts say that the the slightest difference in the amount taken can lead to drastic results. Flakka can induce a wide variety of symptoms on its users, some of which can cause death or severe damage to the body, such as hyperthemia, which is why people often take off their clothes when they are high on the drug. It can also induce paranoia, making users think that they are being chased, or giving them the illusion that they have super strength. Doctors have also stated that it can cause irreparable brain damage or stroke-like symptoms. Some users have even suffered kidney failure and will likely have to be on dialysis for the rest of their lives.

This drug has been linked to a wide variety of odd arrests and brutal incidents throughout the country. NBC Miami has reported many different arrests related to flakka, such as one mom who made headlines for abandoning her one-year-old daughter after smoking it. Multiple instances of people running around naked claiming they were being chased have been reported, or there was the case of one man who tried to have sex with a tree after taking the drug. One man tried to break into a police department because he thought that the mob was after him, while another man was impaled by a fence when he tried to climb over it to get to the police precinct because he thought he was being chased.

This drug has proven to be incredibly dangerous and has taken the country by storm, as it has led to countless overdoses, a plethora of injuries, many bizarre crimes, and numerous deaths. It is cheap to buy compared to other narcotics, although it is so potent that it can induce an extreme level of insanity in its users shortly after being consumed. Educating the public on just how detrimental an effect this drug can have is the top priority of police and drug prevention agencies alike. Police in Florida have even begun dispensing flakka-detection kits to officers, sending drug-detection dogs to mail offices, and also training officers on how to look for signs of mania.

Diane Thomas, 52, from Louisiana, had the police show up at her door after she abused her boyfriend. But Thomas really didn’t want to go to jail–so much so that she offered sexual favors to the arresting officer if he didn’t cart her off. According to the officer she told him, “Officer I will even lick your butt hole.” Unsurprisingly, he turned down that charming offer.

Did this Georgia man do the right thing?

The post Man Saves Dog From Hot Car, Gets Arrested appeared first on Law Street.

It’s a relatively accepted “no no” for an adult to leave a child locked in a parked car in the scorching heat while they grab a latte, chat with a friend, take a yoga class, or basically do anything that doesn’t involve supervising their child. This type of abandonment is so taboo that states have even implemented laws allowing good samaritans to go full on Jazmine Sullivan and “bust the windows out ya car” to rescue trapped overheating kids. Unfortunately one Georgia man learned that these laws don’t extend to pets after he decided to save a panting pooch and was rewarded with handcuffs.

According to a story from USA Today, Michael Hammons, a Desert Storm veteran, used his wife’s wheelchair leg to smash the window of a parked car after hearing from bystanders that there was a dog inside in distress. Hammons told USA Today,

I’ve got PTSD, and I’ve seen enough death and destruction, and I didn’t want anything else to happen if I could prevent it.

One woman who witnessed the rescue claimed to reporters that “if it is 80 degrees outside, within 30 minutes, it will be 114 degrees inside a vehicle, even with the windows cracked.” Bystanders had reportedly already phoned 911 before and were waiting for police to arrive, but for Hammons there was no time to lose. Understandably so, as who wouldn’t want to save this face?

Police were forced to take action after the owner of both the dog and car came out of the store pissed and demanded police arrest him. Oconee County Chief Deputy Lee Weems told USA Today,

We would not have made those charges on our own. The deputies on scene say the owner of the car and of the dog was very insistent that he be charged with criminal trespassing.

The dog’s owner claimed that she had only been gone five minutes, even though witnesses said it was actually much longer. Regardless of how long her errand actually was, the decision to leave her dog susceptible to heat stroke in 80 degree weather wasn’t a bright decision on her part. Since there was no surveillance video proof of her alleged lengthy abandonment, deputies were only able to issue her a citation. Interestingly enough, USA Today reports that Georgia state law does allow for an individual to break a window to save a child in a hot or cold car, just not a pet.

As we approach summer and hotter temps, there will undoubtedly be more cases of naive people leaving young kids and pets being locked in hot cars, so if you’re considering your own rescue attempt consider what happened to Michael Hammons first, and maybe consider waiting for the police.

If you’re in the Northeast today then you’re likely snowed in and binge-watching everything you’ve missed since the holidays. Need a break? Check out the best articles of the week from Law Street. The number one article came from Frank Halprin who covered New York City’s impending crack down on styrofoam; number two is a slideshow of the very weirdest arrests of the week from Anneliese Mahoney; and number three is from Allison Dawson who weighed in on the case of the Florida teenager who posed as a doctor for an entire month. ICYMI check out the best of the week from Law Street.

#1 Wave Goodbye to Your Takeout Containers

On January 8, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration finished the work started by previous Mayor Michael Bloomberg by announcing that styrofoam containers will go by the wayside. This includes to-go boxes from the city’s many food trucks as well as coffee cups and packing peanuts. This is a purely environmental move, which might end up costing consumers more money and inconveniencing vendors. Though it has been met with some controversy, most people agree that ultimately it is a good decision. Read full article here.

#2 Weird Arrests of the Week

It’s the weekend, which means it’s time to look back once again on all the weird things that people did last week. This week’s weird arrests even went international–check out the story from Hong Kong! Read full article here.

#3 Florida Teen Who Pretended to be a Doctor Won’t Face Charges

Recently a 17-year-old boy in Florida posed as a doctor for about a month without anyone even noticing. According to reports, a patient at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach informed staff that a juvenile was dressed in a lab coat and was inside an OB/GYN exam room. The young man was not in the exam room alone, he was with a patient and another doctor. Read full article here.

When you slap employees with a bearded dragon, you end up getting charged with battery and animal cruelty.

I have never owned a business. Truthfully, unless it is a business consisting of only me as an employee, I have no interest in owning one; however, there are some basic tenets  that all business owners should follow. For example, have a solid business plan; make sure to know, understand, and follow all applicable employment laws; and never, ever, ever slap your employees with a bearded dragon, especially if you have a video surveillance system set up (though, admittedly, that last one is pretty hard to follow when a dragon is sitting right next to you and an employee is being a sass mouth).

What? You ask. Why in the world are you telling me not to slap people with dragons? You say. That is such an obvious mistake that nobody would do it! You yell. I hate to tell you but you are dead wrong. I can say that people who assume nobody would ever use a dragon to slap another human are wrong all thanks to Benjamin Siegel. So thank you, Siegel, for your contribution to the ridiculousness that I so love to share with others.

Courtesy of Giphy.

Courtesy of Giphy.

Let’s talk a little about this interesting case. It all started (allegedly, of course) when this business-savvy pet store owner decided it would be a good idea to put a bearded dragon in his mouth, swing it around, throw it in the air, and then use it like an eighteenth century dueling glove (in other words, he slapped his employees with it).

Now, if you think this story cannot get weirder, you would once again be mistaken. You see, this is not the first time that Siegel’s store has made the news. A couple of years ago, it rose to fame as that place that held a cockroach-eating contest where the winner choked to death on bug parts. Yes, you read that correctly.

So what is being done to protect cockroaches, dragons, and people from the strange hands (and mouth) of Mr. Siegel? He was taken into custody and now faces charges of battery and animal cruelty. His attorney says he wants to hear all the facts before he comments. I assume this is just in case Mr. Siegel has a good reason for his action; however, short of ‘it wasn’t me,’ which, since it was on video, would be hard to prove, I don’t know that I will buy any excuses here.
