With Simpson's parole on the horizon, it could happen.

O.J. Simpson received renewed attention over the past year, thanks to the miniseries “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson” and the Oscar winning documentary “O.J.: Made In America.” And now it seems like things are good for the former NFL star and accused murderer; TMZ reports that many reality TV producers are scrambling to sign him if he is released early from prison in October. According to TMZ, some production companies reacted with disgust to the suggestion, while some were pretty eager to capitalize on Simpson’s fame.

Simpson is currently behind bars for armed robbery and kidnapping, which he was convicted of in 2008. He was supposed to serve 33 years, but he is now scheduled for a parole hearing in July that could lead to an early release. Simpson is not new to the reality show sphere; apart from starring in some movies and TV shows, he also participated in an early prank show called “Juiced.”

The talk about a new reality show is only speculative for the moment, and it is far from certain that he will be released in October, but the reports have already created some mixed feelings on social media.

Simpson also wrote a memoir, called “If I Did It,” which bizarrely went through how he would have killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, if he had been the perpetrator. The book was ghostwritten by writer Pablo Fenjves and according to reviews, it read like a confession. Simpson also took part in a TV special for Fox, but it never aired. According to TMZ, the TV episode featured Simpson reading a passage from the book in which he seemed to confess to the murders. Public outcry led to Fox killing the show.

This would probably also be the problem if a new production featuring Simpson became reality–even if someone produced it, there’s the risk that broadcast and cable networks would refuse to air it and it could be hard to find advertisers. But given that these reports appear to be for real, you can never say never when it comes to reality tv.

Four Charged in Kim Kardashian Paris Robbery Case https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/entertainment-blog/kim-kardashian-paris-robbery/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/entertainment-blog/kim-kardashian-paris-robbery/#respond Fri, 13 Jan 2017 20:32:02 +0000 https://lawstreetmedia.com/?p=58174

The robbery of Kim Kardashian in Paris in October is one step closer to being resolved after police arrested 17 suspects in the beginning of the week following a close review of security footage. On Thursday, four of them were charged. Investigators believe the robbery to be an inside job. Most of the suspects, three of whom are women, are professional criminals who have previously committed armed robbery or drug and counterfeit trafficking. A 40-year-old limousine driver from a company the Kardashians frequently use when visiting Paris was arrested, but he was subsequently released. However, his younger brother remains in custody, and police believe he is the one who told the experienced robbers about Kardashian’s whereabouts.

One of the four people charged on Thursday was a 63-year-old man referred to by the name “Yunice A.,” who was charged with armed robbery in an organized gang, kidnapping, and criminal association. He will stay in custody for the time being. Available information about the other suspects include that one 62-year-old and one 27-year-old are facing the same charges as Yunice A. A 44-year-old is charged with concealment/fencing by an organized gang and association with criminals. Six more suspects are still being questioned.

Reportedly, police were able to identify some DNA from the tape used to tie Kardashian, and also from a piece of jewelry that one of the thieves dropped in the street as they fled on rented bicycles. The DNA combined with the surveillance footage led to the arrest of the thieves.

According to the Daily Mail, French authorities won’t let an eyewitness who could testify against the robbers into France. An Algerian concierge at the place where Kardashian was staying, known as Abdulrahman, saw the robbers’ faces. After the robbery, he left France to go home and recover from the stress of being held at gunpoint. Now, the French government won’t issue a visa to let him back in and testify, even though he previously was a legal resident in France. His lawyer Henri de Beauregard said:

I don’t know if this is incompetence or just a bad decision. He is the best witness, he saw the criminals much longer than Miss Kardashian. I hope the police have a lot of solid proof and evidence, because if they don’t, it will be seen as a crazy decision.

The robbery happened when Kardashian was in Paris to attend Fashion Week in the beginning of October. Five men disguised as police officers entered the mansion she was staying in, had the concierge take them to Kardashian’s room and stole jewelry worth $10 million after holding her at gunpoint and tying her up in the bathroom. Among the stolen items was her 20-carat engagement ring, worth $4 million.

Pokémon Go Players are Getting Robbed and Finding Dead Bodies https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/technology-blog/pokemon-go-robbery-dead-body/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/blogs/technology-blog/pokemon-go-robbery-dead-body/#respond Tue, 12 Jul 2016 13:15:32 +0000 http://lawstreetmedia.com/?p=53828

Pokémon Go isn't all fun and games--capture carefully!

When you open the new augmented-reality app Pokémon Go, the first thing you’ll see is a loading message warning: “Remember to be alert at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings.” If you thought the message was slightly melodramatic, trust me, you’re wrong. Since its Wednesday release date, the Pokémon-catching app has already been linked to armed robberies and a newly discovered dead body. So before you start roaming the streets searching for hiding Pikachus or gyms to capture, review this list of some of the weirdly dangerous encounters Pokémon Go players have faced.

Dead Body

Beware any dead bodies while searching for Pokémon. A 19-year-old from Riverton, Wyoming discovered a dead person while playing the game Friday night. Shayla Wiggins told Buzzfeed that she discovered the corpse while taking an early morning walk by Big Wind River to find some Pokémon.

Wiggins was struggling to find any Pokémon, so she walked down to the rocky river bank. “As I looked one way, I noticed that there was something in the water in front of me,” she said. “And so I took a closer look and saw it was a body.” When she finally realized it was in fact a body, she immediately called the police.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death–the corpse was an adult male–which appears to be accidental in nature and possibly caused by drowning.

Armed Robbery

In Missouri, four suspects–who some have already likened to the villainous Team Rocket–used the app to target players in order to rob them. According to the Washington Post,

According to a Facebook post from the O’Fallon Missouri Police Department,

[Police] were able to locate four suspects occupying a black BMW a short time later and recover a handgun. These suspects are suspected of multiple Armed Robberies both in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. It is believed these suspects targeted their victims through the Pokemon Go smart phone application.

The suspects were able to target players using the app’s pokestops–where players frequently gather–in remote areas, such as parking garages.

Injured Players

While the chances that you’ll be targeted by criminals while using the app are very slim, you should be extra cautious about causing accidental harm to yourself. From minor cuts and scrapes, to fractured bones, players are already reporting some serious Pokémon-related injures.

One Redditor with the username Amalthea- claimed,

Not even 30 minutes after the release last night, I slipped and fell down a ditch. Fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in my foot, 6-8 weeks for recovery. I told all the doctors I was walking my dog lol… Watch where you’re going, folks!

Another player in New Zealand claimed to have face-planted while using his skateboard to search for Pokémon around his neighborhood.

Click here for a list of other injuries.

With users’ heads buried in their phones instead of observing their surroundings, injuries like these are bound to happen. However, they are entirely preventable.  In an effort to remind distracted Pokémon Go players not to use their cellphones while driving, the Ohio State Highway Patrol crafted a hashtag #DontCatchAndDrive.

For an explainer on what Pokémon Go is, check out the Washington Post’s rundown here. And while obviously most people playing the game have been fine, it’s always important to follow the game’s instruction and pay attention to your surroundings.

Craigslist Crime: Suspect Charged With Murder of Georgia Couple https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/craigslist-crime-suspect-charged-murder-georgia-couple/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/craigslist-crime-suspect-charged-murder-georgia-couple/#comments Thu, 29 Jan 2015 16:02:23 +0000 http://lawstreetmedia.wpengine.com/?p=33091

Missing Georgia couple found dead, possibly by a man they met on Craigslist.

Elrey “Bud” Runion, 69, and his wife, June, 66, went on Craigslist looking to finally purchase their dream car, a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible. That dream sadly turned into a nightmare after the missing Georgia couple was found dead on Monday, both shot in the head.

Ronnie “Jay” Towns Jr., 28, who was the owner of the phone that last sent messages to the Runions’ phone, turned himself in to the police and has been officially charged with murder and armed robbery.

According to CBS, Bud had posted an ad on Craiglist looking for the specific type of Mustang, and the suspect responded saying he had one for sale, sending the couple photos. The Runions were later reported missing after leaving their home in an Atlanta suburb to drive 200 miles across the state to buy the vintage car from Towns.

The Telfair County Sheriff’s office Facebook page says they found the 2003 GMC Envoy owned by Mr. and Mrs. Runion submerged in a lake, without revealing exactly where said lake was. Police suspect Towns lured the couple into the woods, attempted to rob the two before killing them.

Shortly before Towns turned himself in Telfair County Sheriff Chris Steverson  told CNN:

Early on in the investigation, we did contact Mr. Towns, and we did interview him and by the information he provided, we found it to be false and deceptive. After we interviewed him, our efforts to contact him were unsuccessful. Today we’ve contacted his family, and they’ve been helpful in locating him.

In a Telfair County court Tuesday, Towns waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and a judge denied his bail.

Ronnie Towns Sr.  told a CNN affiliate WSB on Tuesday that he helped convince his son to turn himself in.

He said, ‘Daddy, I ain’t had nothing to do with this.’ It ain’t Jay. I don’t believe he did it.

This isn’t the first time Craigslist has been in the news for a high profile murder case. The website made headlines when Philip Markoff, the infamous “Craigslist Killer”, was arrested in 2009 after allegedly robbing and killing Julissa Brisman. Markoff later committed suicide in jail while awaiting his trial. There have also been other incidences of Craigslist-related killings, often robberies gone wrong. Check out our “Killers of Craigslist” slideshow here.

Whether or not Towns will be found guilty remains unknown, but it seems like this tragic case has ended up with the correct suspect in custody.
