Angela Merkel Implies that Europe Can No Longer Rely on the U.S.

After his recent trip, some European leaders seem a little sick of President Donald Trump. German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently hinted, without specifically mentioning Trump’s name, that European countries can no longer consider the U.S. a reliable ally. During a rally held inside a Bavarian beer tent on Sunday, she said, “The times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days.” She added that Europe “really must take our fate into our own hands.”

During his visit to Europe, Trump said he might pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement–the most unified effort to combat climate change to date. Trump has also expressed support for Brexit and encouraged other countries in the European Union to explore leaving the coalition. As a result, many Europeans see Trump as a potential threat to regional stability. But now it seems like his recent comments and behavior in Europe could actually unite Europe–even Merkel’s rivals in the upcoming national elections have supported her response. This morning, Trump hit back against Germany with a tweet (of course).

Update 2/23/2017: Despite earlier reports, Abu Izzadeen was not the attacker. Izzadeen is still in prison on unrelated matters. The identity of the attacker is still unknown.

It’s unclear if it was the same car, but moments later, witnesses said a vehicle rammed the gates of Parliament. It was reported that the driver got out and stabbed a police officer. Witnesses said the officer was still moving when the assailant took off running, as other police officers shouted at him to stop. When he didn’t comply, several shots rang out and the attacker was killed.

Inside the building, the House of Commons was meeting; everyone was instructed to remain inside. Prime Minister Theresa May was quickly reported as unharmed. Witnesses outside described the situation as confused and panicked, with people running in all directions and officers giving contradictory orders.

What made the incident even more haunting is that it occurred on the anniversary of the suicide bombings in Brussels that killed more than 30 people and injured at least 260. London has recently been spared from terror attacks–the last major attack in the city was the 2005 subway bombings that killed 52 people and injured more than 700. Now, London joins the list of European capitals that have recently been targets of terrorism. And there are similarities between some of the recent attacks–a vehicle was used as a weapon just like in France, Germany and Israel.

According to the Metropolitan Police in London, a “full counter terrorism investigation is already underway.” Police asked people to stay away from public areas in central London and to report any suspicious activities. Police also urged people to send in photos they took of the attacks. The head of counter terrorism, Mark Rowley, confirmed that four people are dead. “That includes the police officer that was protecting parliament and one man believed to be the attacker who was shot by a police firearms officer,” he said.

Some of the injured victims were a woman who either fell or jumped into the River Thames when the car crashed into the people on the bridge, and a group of visiting French students. Foreign Office minister Tobias Ellwood tried to revive the stabbed police officer outside of the parliament, but was unsuccessful. Lawmakers inside the House of Commons stayed on lockdown for two hours while police searched the whole building for any additional threats.

Andrew Bone was on a bus that was stopped on the bridge after the car had rammed into people and said, “I am of the generation who remembers I.R.A. bombs in London during The Troubles,” referring to the conflicts in Northern Ireland that lasted from 1968 to 1998. “We are not indifferent, but police have reacted with calm. I saw no panic.”

By Wednesday afternoon, police said the the attacker was Abu Izzadeen, who was born in London as Trevor Brooks. He was well known by authorities for his links to Islamic terrorism and had been to prison for funding, inciting, and praising terror acts. Reportedly he called for the killing of police officers and said he saw members of Parliament as infidels.

World leaders expressed their solidarity with London on Twitter, although President Donald Trump has yet to make a statement. The NYPD increased security at some high-profile locations around New York City, like the British Consulate, United Nations Mission, and Grand Central Terminal.

State Department: Israeli Girl Stabbed to Death in West Bank Was a U.S. Citizen https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/girl-stabbed-west-bank-american/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/girl-stabbed-west-bank-american/#respond Fri, 01 Jul 2016 20:26:56 +0000 http://lawstreetmedia.com/?p=53692

Violence continues to flare up in the West Bank.

The State Department confirmed on Thursday that the 13-year-old girl who was stabbed to death while sleeping in her bed in the West Bank was a U.S. citizen. The girl, identified by the State Department as Hallel Yaffa Ariel, held dual citizenship and her uncle lives in New York. On Thursday a 17-year-old Palestinian climbed the fence to the settlement where the girl lived with her family and stabbed her multiple times. She later died from her injuries.

State Department spokesperson John Kirby condemned the attack on Twitter:

In a press release issued on the State Department’s website, Kirby wrote:

We condemn in the strongest possible terms the outrageous terrorist attack this morning in the West Bank where a 13-year-old girl, Hallel Ariel, was stabbed to death in her home. This brutal act of terrorism is simply unconscionable.

The teenager who stabbed the girl fled the scene but was then shot and killed by security guards. This was only one of many violent attacks that have recently struck the city of Hebron in the West Bank. According to ABC, 33 Israelis, 200 Palestinians, and two American tourists have been killed in stabbings, shootings, and vehicular attacks in the past nine months.

An Israeli journalist posted a video clip from the girl’s funeral, showing hundreds of supporters.

“What makes someone slit the throat of a child? It’s not the quest for peace. It’s the mind flooded with hate and incitement, an ideology that says this child is not a human being,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Facebook post . He went on to call the deed an act of terrorism that can’t be tolerated:

We will always fight the terrorists. We will fight their despatchers; we will fight the inciters; we will fight the sponsors. You do battle with terrorism by fighting the terrorists and those who back them.

Hebron is the home of many hundred Jewish settlers who live in a small and tightly guarded area surrounded by over 200,000 Palestinians. The slow–or nonexistent–progress in peace talks between the two nations, bad leadership, and instigation by the media are all named as reasons for consistently high tensions in the region.

In June, world leaders met in France to discuss how to move forward with the peace negotiations. At the meeting, world leaders planned an international conference that is to be held before the end of the year. But as violence continues to flare up in the West Bank, any sort of peace agreement between Palestinians and Israelis remains a far off goal.

Ex-Power Ranger Accused of Killing Roommate With Sword https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/ex-power-ranger-allegedly-kills-roommate-sword/ https://legacy.lawstreetmedia.com/news/ex-power-ranger-allegedly-kills-roommate-sword/#comments Mon, 02 Feb 2015 17:29:55 +0000 http://lawstreetmedia.wpengine.com/?p=33562

Ready to have some nostalgia ruined? A former Power Rangers actor was just arrested for murder.

Today in the category of super bizarre news that is sure to ruin your childhood, former Power Ranger Ricardo Medina Jr. has been arrested for killing his roommate with a samurai sword.

According to a statement released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,  Medina, 36, got into an argument that turned physical with his roommate Joshua Stutter, 36, at their Palmdale, CA home. There’s no indication at this point of what they were arguing about, or what motive Medina may have had to go after his roommate. LASD recounted the incident stating:

Suspect Medina retreated to his bedroom with his girlfriend, but Victim Sutter followed them and forced the door open.  Suspect Medina stabbed Victim Sutter once in the abdomen with a sword kept next to the bedroom door.

The department said Medina called 911 after the altercation and waited for police to arrive at the scene before being taken into custody and booked for murder at the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station, where he is currently being held with a $1 million bail.

Medina is best known for his role as Cole Evans, the Red Wild Force Ranger on the franchise’s tenth season, Power Rangers Wild Force. Ironically enough, his most recent acting role was as the samurai-wielding villain Deker in the 2012 film Power Rangers Super Samurai.

What’s even more surprising is Medina isn’t the only former Power Rangers actor to be accused of murder. In 2004, Skylar Deleon, an actor in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, murdered an Arizona couple while trying to steal their boat by tying them to an anchor and throwing them overboard. On April 10, 2009 Deleon was sentenced to death for the murders.

Medina is set to appear in court Tuesday morning. For my fellow 90s kids who grew up watching season after season of power rangers fight bad guys in crayon colored jumpsuits, I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t at all how we wanted to reminisce.
