For too long, America’s literary circles have been dominated by white men. That’s why PEN is actively working to give voice to writers of color – writers like Henry Chang, Meena Alexander, Sergio de La Pava, and Tina Chang, who were in attendance on Tuesday night, and Maaza Mengiste, who couldn’t attend but submitted a piece read aloud by Deji Olukotun. Each year, PEN awards the Open Book Award to celebrate the contributions of writers of color and help raise the voices of those who have been silenced for too long. This is another lesson Mayor-elect de Blasio could take from PEN Members. As Henry Chang put it: “More than a tale of two cities, NYC is a tale of many little cities spread across the five boroughs… the city is a melting pot of culture. We believe the better we can get to know each other through our words, the better we can get along.”
